Dec 11 - In the recent "Four Way" Competition between St Andrews Photographic
Society and three local societies, St Andrews came second with a score of 227 points. Perthshire Photographic Society
were overall winners by a narrow margin with 229 points, while Dundee Photographic Society gained 216 points and Glenrothes
Camera Club gained 213 points. St Andrews did particularly well in the print sections, winning the monochrome section
with 101 points.
The competition was held in Perth Museum and Gallery on Wednesday 7th December 2011 and the judge was Dave Hunt, a professional
fine art photographer.
Nov 2011 - At the Scottish Print Championships held in Stirling on the 20 November 2011, 42 Scottish Photographic Clubs
competed. After a long and exciting day when the best work from Scotland was shown, members of St Andrews Photographic
Society were delighted to hear that they had come fifth in Scotland, no mean feat for such a small club. They achieved
this with a portfolio of 42 prints, just half the number that they were allowed to enter.
The prints were marked by three judges and the top ten prints in both colour and monochrome sections were taken into
account in the final scoring. Here, St Andrews achieved 235 marks, with Edinburgh Photographic Society, the biggest
club in Scotland, winning with 271 marks. Carluke and Dumfries tied for second place and Dundee Photographic Society
came 4th with 259 marks.
Among the high scoring prints from St Andrews was "Pavilion in Winter" by Nicola Shepherd. This was a delicate
study of the bandstand in the Scores on a snowy day, it gained 14 out of a possible 15 marks and was highly commended by the
judges. Caroline Macdonald gained 13 marks for "Red Umbrella", another snow scene. In addition, Ian Sturrock gained
13 marks for his prints "Autumn Morning" and "Winters Pallette". Stan Farrow also gained scores of 13 for his prints
"Yellowstone Thermophiles" and "Two Tulips".
All five of the winning Scottish clubs have been invited to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Club Print Championships,
which will be held in Connah's Quay in North Wales in October of next year. This is a competition for the best photographic
clubs in Britain and is by invitation only. This is the first time that St Andrews Photographic Society has done so
well and members are already very excited at being invited to represent Scotland on a UK-wide stage. Members do realise
that they will have to raise their game to compete against the best photography in Britain, but they are already beginning
to plan for this and are confident of managing to maintain their high scores.
